Casino – A Movie About Gambling
In a time when movies are all too often superficial, Casino takes us into the heart of what it’s really like to gamble. It’s a movie about greed, violence and treachery – a world of low life characters who get their comeuppance. Unlike Goodfellas and Boogie Nights, Scorsese doesn’t hold back with the violence, but it is never gratuitous. Scenes such as the torture of De Niro’s character, the attempted murder of Sharon Stone’s character and Nicky’s revenge on Ginger are all disturbing yet entirely convincing.
Modern casinos are designed to be exciting, dazzling places where people drink and mingle over cocktails, trying their luck with games of chance such as slots and poker. They are often themed with extravagant decorations and upbeat music that create a sexy, glamorous feel. The lights and music give gamblers a sense of euphoria, a manufactured thrill that keeps them coming back to take another chance on luck.
Casinos make most of their money from slot machines, blackjack, roulette and other games of chance. They also offer a variety of entertainment and dining options to attract and keep customers. They have elaborate surveillance systems that allow security workers to watch the entire casino floor through cameras that can be focused on specific patrons. Some casinos have special rooms for high rollers, whose wagers can be in the tens of thousands of dollars. These gamblers are given exclusive treatment and comped with free hotel rooms, food and drinks.
