The Basics of Poker

The game of Poker is actually a mix of several earlier card games. One of the earliest references to the game is from a Mississippi riverboat. A man named Jonathan H. Green is said to have coined the term when he witnessed a cheating game being played between two to four players with only Aces and the number nine. Green subsequently went on to describe the game as ‘poker’, which translates to “game of cards”.

In a game of poker, the dealer is not a player but a token that rotates clockwise around the table. In the first round, the players are forced to place bets, a practice called forced betting. During the betting phase, players may either fold or check their hands. Folding means that the player has lost the bet, while checking indicates that the player does not wish to make a bet. In both variations, the best hand wins the pot.

The player to the left of the button must make the small blind or the big blind. Blind bets are mandatory, and any player who does not want to post the blinds must forfeit the game. Poker games are often divided into two types, cash games and tournaments. Each has its own set of rules. Poker can be played in a variety of formats, so you should choose a game that suits your needs. For example, a ring game focuses on small stakes while a tournament focuses on larger stakes.
